O2 Picture Messages - Problem (and solution)

1) Problem

We've identified what appears to be quite a serious problem for anyone trying to send Picture messages (MMS) using the O2 network.

The problem occurs when you send a Picture message from your phone to some email addresses. The sender is informed that the message has been delivered but this is quite simply not the case. The O2 system does not connect to the destination mail server and the mail is not delivered.

Unfortunately, the email addresses involved include those for the standard openZpace "multimedia mailbox" for example: mm@yoursite.openzpace.com

O2 technical staff have been made aware of this problem. However, there is as yet no information as to when a resolution may be put in place.

It's worth pointing out that the problem is not restricted to openZpace mail addresses and our tests indicate that a wide range of common mail accounts will also suffer from this behaviour.

2) Solution

With immediate effect, all openZpace users can now send both Picture messages (and standard emails) to their "multimedia mailbox" using an alternate address of the form mm.yoursite@openzpace.com as well as the standard form mm@yoursite.openzpace.com

O2 picture messages using the alternate form are delivered correctly (weird - but the techies seem pleased to have worked this out).

Updates for October 2004

There's a raft of new features now available at openZpace.

1) photoZpace is live!

The new photoZpace service is now active on all openZpace accounts. photoZpace lets you order prints and gifts using pictures in your openZpace photo album. photoZpace is brought to you in partnership with PhotoBox, the UK's leading digital printing service. Digital Camera voted PhotoBox as the overall winner in their Oct 2004 head-to-head review of digital printing labs.

Click here to learn more about photoZpace and how to enable it on your site.

2) Instant Mobile Posting

One of the things we like the best about openZpace is being able to post new journals and photos by picture messaging (MMS), text (SMS) and email. However, we wanted this process to be faster, so we came up with "Instant Mobile".

Instant Mobile means that as soon as an email/MMS/SMS arrives at openZpace, it is published instantly on your site. You can, of course, control who can post messages in this way and whether they are automatically made public or not.

Instant Mobile is also a lot more flexible with regards to who you can allow to post messages to your site. You can now enable posts from anonymous users. You can also validate friend and member mobile numbers without the need for an SMS pin code to be sent.

To enable and configure Instant Mobile on your site, select 'Settings' from the main menu and then go to the 'Messaging' category. Read more about using your mobile with openZpace here.

3) Fresher News

We've enhanced the RSS news feeds produced by your openZpace site. For example, if you choose to syndicate your photo albums, files or events, the feed will now include links that allow these items to be downloaded.

If you syndicate your Events calendar, people reading the feed can now add selected events to their appointments schedule - even on their mobile if they're viewing the WAP version of a openZpace site.

To setup how your site syndicates items - select 'Settings' from the main menu and then go to the 'News feeds' category.

If you spend a lot of time viewing your favourite news feeds on your mobile - you'll be pleased to know there's now the option to view your feeds by topic - just follow the new 'News topics' link when viewing news on on your mobile.

4) Quicker Create

There is now a quicker way to create a new journal, photo or whatever. You'll notice a new link in the menu when you're viewing items on your site. If you are viewing journals - it says "Create new journal", if you are viewing photos - it says "Create new photo". A very useful add on.

We've added a new service called photoZpace to openZpace which enables you to order prints and gifts using the photos on your site. This service is provided in partnership with PhotoBox, the UK's leading digital photographic print laboratory.

Album photos can be printed in a variety of sizes (supplied with or without frames) or printed onto personalised gifts such as calendars, coasters, key rings, greetings cards, mouse mats, mugs, placemats, postcards or wallet cards. You can even have passport photos delivered to your door by using photoZpace!
